This month’s book review is another good one. It is a book written by Carlo Ancelotti called ‘Quiet Leadership’ and very timely given earlier this month Carlo as manager of Real Madrid, won this year’s Champions League. This was his fifth win as a manager, making him the most successful coach in European Cup history, and he also won it twice as a player. As an Arsenal fan I would be happy with just one in my lifetime!! He is a legend of football management.
Anyone who knows of Carlo Ancelotti, will understand that the name of the book being ‘Quiet Leadership’ is very appropriate. You rarely ever see him ranting and raving like other managers (during matches and in training) and he doesn’t get involved in the mind games between managers via the media. He is calm and understated but has a way about him, and this very much comes across in the book.
The book was actually written back in 2016 and it starts with Carlo explaining that he had just lost out on the manager’s job at Liverpool, and someone called Jurgen Klopp got it instead. Carlo thought Klopp would do very well in England!!
This book is about football, management and leadership. Early on the book says this is not just for football fans or a book about football. I would agree with that. However, I do think it will resonate better with those who have an interest in football, mainly because all the examples and stories come from the world of football and at the many football teams he has managed over the years.
There are some great stories included and show a real insight behind the curtain of management and how to deal with players and owners. These include:
AC Milan – balancing the egos and a team of stars and managing the owners which included the colourful Silvio Berlusconi.
Chelsea – handling the immense pressure from Abramovich to win, and to use the players he bought!
Real Madrid – the journey to winning “La Décima,” Real Madrid’s long-awaited 10th UEFA Champions League title. He highlights the tactical adjustments and man-management skills.
PSG – going in to start a project, but not being given the time to finish it.
This book was written before his time at Everton, as that might be a book all of its own!!

I really enjoyed this book and having seen Ancelotti managing for years, this book provides a great behind the scenes look into this legend of a football manager.
